The reasons for homelessness are many and often complex. To many of the homeless , it seems that the door to opportunity has closed. And while there is no average “homeless” individual , there is one thing that they all have in common : they are waiting for the door to open. There is an open door at 4 Merritt Street in South Norwalk. Here the homeless find refuge in the form of a safe, warm place to sleep. They find nonjudgmental people who care about them.

The open door is called the Norwalk Emergency Shelter. Providing safe emergency shelter care for men, women and families, the Shelter also operates a breakfast , lunch and dinner soup kitchen, The Manna House of Hospitality. On average, 85-95 people stay at the Shelter per night, and it is frequently full.

When asked why she volunteers, Peggy Andral, VAC Award winner answered,

"It's my way to return the kindness that others have shown me. Throughout my whole life there was a helping hand. Without the generosity and help of others, I don't know what I would have done as a single mother of two kids. I'm very humbled by what people have done for me. I'm grateful to be able to help, too."

The Norwalk Emergency Shelter and the Manna House of Hospitality are open three hundred sixty five days a year. The shelter sleeps ninety-five people and offers case management services to all that stay at the shelter as well as anyone else in the community in need. The Manna House serves three meals a day, every day of the year. This translates to over 12,000 meals served monthly.
